| Blogging with Phi Kaps |

Throughout the 2008 Leadership Institute 4 different Phi Kaps were asked to blog about their experience. Below are excerpts from those blogs.
FRIDAY
- Paul Restivo – A large portion of the day was focused on maintaining relevancy. This is key in maintaining positive relations with the undergrads. Much needs to be done in terms of keeping communication and policies relevant to our men.
- Matt Sullivan – It clicked. I had that light bulb moment. Today wasn’t about best practices, it really was about communication. As an alumni advisor, much of what we do is helping the collegiate students learn, and not necessarily tell them what to do. This requires the coaching that we rehearsed.
- Chris Liepman – (in reference to Confessions of a Recruitment Director) I do have a resume, and before Brad’s presentation I was very proud of this resume but he enlightened me in ways to drastically improve it. This presentation was worth the travel and the time to spend this weekend in Arizona, the information he gave me would help me land a job and hopefully a future career!
- Chad Mondor – One of the most worthwhile things I believe our Fraternity does at President’s Academy and Leadership Institute is that they have programming soley aimed at improving and developing the individual person, not the chapter. Sessions like “Job Bound” with Brad Karsh show us that the Fraternity cares about developing it’s leaders outside of the Fraternity.
SATURDAY
- Paul Restivo – JC Smith, Man of Excellence said, “I learned sacrifice from Phi Kappa Theta.” I had never thought of sacrifice as one of the qualities I learned, but there is no doubt, it certainly is one of the greatest gifts I gained. Being selfless speaks right to our motto: “give … expecting nothing thereof.”
- Matt Sullivan – (commenting on the Ritual exemplification) I think that this opportunity reinforced my beliefs in the organization; I was a little ashamed that I never took it upon myself to learn more about this esteemed ceremony, which is the keystone of our brotherhood.
- Chris Liepman – Sean told us, “Cause is the side of life where you have results you want but you own everything that has happened in your life. Effect is the reasons for why you don’t have what you want.” Just this statement is something that I feel I will remember for a long period of time and can use for every instance in my life. Sean truly did motivate me.
- Chad Mondor – Winning so many awards after being recolonized made me proud of what we have accomplished but more importantly inspired me to build upon the legacy of the brothers that have come before me and to better improve my chapter.
SUNDAY
- Paul Restivo – More than any session or awards won, it was important to bond with brothers from around the country. Most often we get caught up in our own chapters and forget that there are Phi Kaps thousands of miles away struggling with the same problems and celebrating the same achievements.
- Matt Sullivan – As I start the (iServe) program, I also want to make sure that I help other chapters reach their next level. As much as I love “winning”, this isn’t a competition between chapters, but rather recognition of things done well, and that’s really the goal: to have everything done well.
- Chad Mondor – For a person who never thought they would go Greek less than 12 months ago, I can say with complete sincerity that it has been one of the best decisions of my life. I whole-heartedly recommend the Leadership Institute to every Phi Kap seeking to get more out of their Fraternity experience.

| What is Leadership Institute? |
In the off Convention years, the Fraternity hosts a national Leadership Institute that all chapters and alumni are invited to attend. The Institute features numerous workshops and discussions on fraternal values, leadership and advising, and includes networking opportunities, an exemplification of our Ritual and an awards banquet recognizing the highest performing chapters of the past year.
In 2008, the Institute focused on both undergraduate leadership development as well as alumni member development. The National Fraternity has expanded the programming of this meeting to attract and engage more of our alumni members.
Why should you come as an alumnus?
- Professional Networking Sessions
- Reunion Opportunity
- Educational Programming
- Learn how to get involved as a Volunteer
- Become a mentor, local / regional advisor or an alumni association officer
- MAKE IT A VACATION!
